The Intercultural Effectiveness Scale (IES) evaluates competencies essential for effective interaction with people from different cultures. Using three dimensions (Continuous Learning, Interpersonal Engagement, and Hardiness) it assesses how well people work effectively with people who are different from them. The IES, developed by the Kozai Group and available on the Aperian Global Learning Portal, is an assessment that can measure students' intercultural competencies. The GlobeSmart Profile, on the other hand, is not an assessment, but can work hand-in-hand with the IES.

The GlobeSmart Profile shows students the "gap" between themselves and a particular culture. The IES shows the student how well equipped they are to bridge that gap and work effectively with the other culture.
